Hi! This week I am reviewing Scarlet and Ivy - The Whispers in the Walls by Sophie Cleverly. If you have not read the first book in the series and you would like to, please do not read this review. Like the first book, I would recommend it for 8-11 year olds because some parts are a bit scary.
This is the second book in the series. Miss Fox, the evil headmistress who was standing in, has left and the original Headmaster Mr Bartholemew is back. Violet (another pupil who disappeared last term) is also back and Ivy has to pretend that she has never been in Rookwood School and wasn't standing in for Scarlet. The twins soon discover that Violet has a big secret and keeps sneaking off during the night.
One night, Scarlet, Ivy and their new friend Ariadne follow Violet who goes into the library and opens a secret door leading to a hidden basement. In the basement there is a girl called Rose who Violet is looking after, but Rose is not a pupil at Rookwood and has to be kept a secret. There is a tapestry on the wall which falls down and reveals a hidden message from a secret society called the Whispers in the Walls who intended to get rid of Mr Bartholemew. Alongside the message is a list of students in the society, they are: Ida Smith, Katie Morwen and Emmeline Adel. Emmeline Adel is the name of Scarlet and Ivy's mother! Scarlet, Ivy and Ariadne suspect that Mr Bartholemew is up to no good so decide to try and finish what the Whispers in the Walls started...
Is this a good book?
Like the first book, it is a very good book because it has an interesting mystery and it makes you feel like you are really there helping Scarlet, Ivy and Ariadne to solve the mystery.
Who is my favourite character in the book?
My favourite character in the book is Rose because if Violet hadn't hidden her in Rookwood then they wouldn't have discovered the message from the Whispers in the Walls and they wouldn't have suspected that Mr Bartholemew was up to something...
What would I rate it out of 10?
I would rate it 9 1/2 out of 10 because even though it is a really good book I think it could be improved in some places. Also, I think that the first book was a bit better because it was the first book in the series and I didn't know that the book would be so intriguing.
If you have read this book, please leave me a comment on what you thought of it, and if you haven't read it I would recommend it to you (after you have read the first book of course!) I look forward to writing my next post but for now, farewell.
Yes I would recommend this to adults as well as children.
Great review Erin. You’ve summarised the plot really well!
Lovely review Erin - I love your choice of books and interesting insights into the plot and characters. Would you recommend the book to adults as well?
This review is awesome - it really makes me want to read this book - it sounds great!
I’m buying the first book! Then I’ll get the second. Thanks for the heads up. The series sounds as if it will be a really good read for my grandchildren. Excellent review. Is there a third book? Keep them coming!
